I'm uploading this as I play, and when I come across something that I can't decide on, I'll leave it to you. Once I fail (or, against all odds, somehow succeed.), I'll probably let you guys decide what I play. My first run, I jumped right in, choosing my own race and class. It's not about become incredibly broken or prodding the game to see what happens (Though if you can do either safely, it's always welcome!), it's about survival. When you stand to lose everything in a game, your mindset completely changes. In fact, my love for Nethack was a large part of why I so enjoy the Nuzlocke challenge, and it's for the same reason. I discovered Nethack some time ago, long before I discovered Nuzlockes, and I fell in love with it, but it wasn't until I found Dungeon Crawl that I found my favorite-well, one of my favorites, anyways-game ever. Even Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is inspired by Rogue-its random dungeons and item layouts are in the spirit of Roguelikes, even if death isn't exactly permanent. I probably shouldn't have to explain all of this-with the release of games like Dungeons of Dredmor and FTL: Faster than Light, the Roguelike genre has grown more popular. I know I keep saying it, but the game is hard, and in roguelike fashion, death is permanent. Everything is randomized, from the layout of the dungeon to what each potion does to what dangers you will have to face. The point is, I've played it for a long time, across hundreds of characters, and I've never beaten the game.Įdit: As of August 20, 2015, I have achieved victory for the first time ever!
